The 6 things you need in your business
There are so many things that you could have in your business but before you get all those nice to have things like a virtual assistant, a fancy membership site or all the software you can find, these 6 things make up the foundation of your business. Once you have all these things in place, you'll be able to grow and scale your business in whatever way you like.
1 - Your perfect business
Now I don't mean that everything you do needs to be perfect before you do it, I mean are you running the right business?
Are you doing what YOU want to do? Does your business light a fire in you and do you actually want to do the work? Don't start the business you think you should start. Start a business that you have a passion for as you'll need to work on and in your business on the bad days as well as the good. If you don't really like what you're doing, you'll never be as successful as you could be.
But the great thing about running your own business? If you don't like it, change it!
2 - Your ideal client
Who do you want to work with? What are their pain points or their biggest problems that you want to help them with? Knowing who they are and what their problems are will drive your business in a certain direction.
If you want to work with women over 50 who want to lose weight, it's not going to be the same as working with women under 35 trying to lose baby weight. Just saying you want to help women lose weight isn't specific enough!
Once you know who you want to work with, make a list of the attributes you don't want to work with. You don't have to work with everyone. If you don't want to work with people who are always late or don't pay on time, then add it to your list.
No-one wants to work with those nightmare clients so knowing what you don't want in a client makes it easier to say no to them. It's not just about the money remember.
3 - Your signature offering
When you know your ideal client's biggest problem, you'll know how you can solve it. What skills, knowledge and experience do you already have to solve their problem? What do you love to do and what comes easily to you?
This is your signature offering, the thing that you want to be known for and the thing that you could do every day and still enjoy it (because with any luck you will be doing it every day!)
4 - Your website
It doesn't need to be perfect, it doesn't need to have fancy plug ins, it doesn't even need to have more than one page.
When you're starting out it's easy to hide behind not having a perfect website before launching your business but that's just an excuse holding you back from getting out there!
Having a one page website that says a bit about you, what you do and has your social media links will do to start off. You can work on your website alongside everything else but unless you're visible to your ideal client, no-one will see your website anyway
5 - Your social media and marketing
You need to get known and get yourself out there in order for your ideal client to find you. Social media is the easiest way to do that and to get in front of a large audience quickly and cheaply.
The most popular platforms are:
It's up to you where you want to be but you need to be on the platform that is most popular with your ideal client.
You also need to create a schedule to stop you from spending all day online. Spending 30 minutes posting and interacting 4 times a day, every day is perfect and manageable.
6 - Your tech
Lastly you need a way to capture your potential clients email addresses, a way to work with your clients and a way to take payments.
These could be things like MailChimp or mad mimi for email. Something like Skype, zoom or uberconference for working with your clients and something like PayPal or stripe for taking payments.
These are all free to use to begin with (PayPal does take a fee from your payments) so setting these up will only cost you a few minutes each.
Once you have these 6 things in place you've got everything you need to work with clients and make money. As for everything else, you can work on your business and add things to it as you go.
